Southern Air-Yellowcard,Reveiw
I have to confess, I have not heard much of Yellowcard. From what I have heard ,I gather their instrumentals are amazing and the lyrics are pretty childish. Frankly, I can’t say much has changed this time around though it is much less childish. The instrumentals , on the other hand are pretty good. The rhythm , lead , drums, everything.
“Awakening” kicks Southern Air off with a lengthy and incredibly well-written song that has no equal for the remainder of the album. This is Yellowcard at their finest, delivering a memorable track with almost all of their trademarks: buoyant drumming from Longineu Parsons III and cheerful guitar riffs from Ryan Mendez It’s unfortunate that the best song of the album comes so soon, but “Awakening” certainly starts Southern Air off on a promising note.
“Here I Am Alive” marks one of the album’s most infectious singles as well as one of the most diverse tracks i have heard in the album. Whereas the majority of the band’s catchy appeal lies in their pure pop punk sound, this contagious song expands into pop territory with a synth beat .
Where as the first two standout tracks are largely devoid of the incredible violin of Mackin that separates Yellowcard from other punk pop bands, “Sleep In The Snow” sets things back on track. Violin riffs may only fit in the background, but they add fun and sentiment with accompanying guitar and piano. This song won’t turn any heads initially, but it could just be the most underrated track of Southern Air in following “Here I Am Alive”.”Ten” is another amazing song, musically exceptional!
Yellowcard always have leaned more to the pop end of pop-punk, complete with their unique blend of youthful naivety and nostalgia, being able to perfectly recreate the summer romances and teenage angst. Lyrically, Southern Air, the band seems more like the sad 30 year old reliving his glory days while the world moves on without him. However, With an upbeat tempo, heavy guitar riffs, rapid-fire drumming and a dash of ingenuity in the form of Mackin’s genius violin-playing (see “Always Summer” or the fast-paced rock gem “Rivertown Blues”), Yellowcard proves their skills as musicians.
Yellowcard is Ryan Key (vocals/guitar), Sean Mackin (violin), Longineu ("LP") Parsons (drums), Ryan Mendez (guitar) and Josh Portman (bass).
